The story stretches back nearly a century. Founder Rubin Hanan emigrated to the United States from the isle of Rhodes in the early 1920s. He came through Ellis Island and wasted no time setting up his life in the states, settling in Montgomery, Alabama, where he had a family contact.
There he met and married his wife and partner in business, Julia. Together they opened a meat market called Penny Profit near downtown Montgomery. Known around town as “Mis' Rubin,” Julia created the signature spice blends that gave their shop an advantage over the larger stores in the area.

Those blends — including the beloved Black Magic and White Magic — turned Penny Profit into a famous stop across the region. They have been on the market since 1935 and enjoyed by generations of loyal customers ever since.
